Research notes
Unnecessary Inventions is the Vermont designer Matty Benedetto's studio of satirical products that solve problems nobody has, documented in videos on social media (Wikipedia; Seven Days; The Hustle). Its website has a rug-making tutorial on making custom rugs with a tufting gun, including a rug of his Gator Grips (unnecessaryinventions.com/tufting-gun-tutorial), and it has sold rugs such as the ZuckerRug, a bath mat. His 50-foot CVS receipt rug (January 2024) was reproduced by a manufacturer in China from a scan, not tufted in the studio (Retail Brew). A summary of his X account (@mattyxb) mentions a studio rug based on his Pantone colour charts. Instagram: @unnecessaryinventions, the account where Benedetto built his audience after starting in 2019 (search summaries of press coverage; one article counted more than 117,000 followers); the handle was confirmed by the author on 31 Oct 2026.
