Research notes
New York custom carpet house. The company says Edward Fields developed a hand-tufting tool, the "Magic Needle", in the mid-1930s, which gave its rugs their signature hand-tufted texture. The company also says Fields coined the term "area rug", tied to a 1952 series of five rugs by Raymond Loewy (another company page says the term came with its first collection at Lord & Taylor in the 1950s). Clients cited by the company include Philip Johnson's Glass House and the White House. Jack Fields sold the firm to Tai Ping in 2005 (confirmed by Rug News); it now operates as a Tai Ping brand (see co-tai-ping). Why it matters: a second American founding studio of hand-tufting alongside V'Soske, and the origin of the "area rug" as a marketing idea that broke with wall-to-wall carpet. Dates: 1935 founding and 2005 sale agree across company site and Rug News; a 1stdibs listing's "since 1929" and "acquired 2015" are wrong. "Coined area rug" and the Magic Needle story are company claims.
