Research notes
Claims descent from the carpet business set up in 1881 by A. Tellery, a European entrepreneur who organised Bhadohi's weavers (Tellery's son Otto later became first president of the All India Carpet Manufacturers Association; see ner-in-colonial-bhadohi). After Independence the business was sold to a Calcutta Marwari house; the Patodia family took control around 1980 and built the Hands brand (Ravi, Apurva and Pranay Patodia). Makes hand-knotted and hand-tufted carpets; credited with a very large carpet for the Grand Mosque in Nur-Sultan (Astana). Why it matters: links the colonial founding of Bhadohi's export trade to a present-day hand-tufted exporter. Dates: 1881 consistent across company and design press; Patodia takeover "1980" vs "end of the Raj". "World's largest handmade carpet" is a company/press claim. Continuity from Tellery to Hands is asserted by the company, not independently documented.
