Research notes

Ray Anderson left Milliken in 1973 to bring European free-lay carpet tiles to the US, in a joint venture with the British firm Carpets International (Carpets International-Georgia); first plant in LaGrange, Georgia. Renamed Interface after going public; acquisitions included Heuga (1988). Known since 1994 for Anderson's sustainability programme; he died in 2011. The company says it made "America's first modular carpet tile". Why it matters: carried the carpet tile into US commercial flooring, now a major format for machine-tufted carpet. Dates: LaGrange plant 1973 (Interface) vs 1974 (encyclopedia sources); IPO/renaming dates differ across sources. "First"/"largest carpet-tile maker" are company or press claims.
