Research notes
Founded in 1920 in Mirzapur by three Britons (the name is their initials, O-B-T); the partnership was dissolved in 1932 and replaced by a company named Obeetee. O'Ganj factory 1955; the company says it was the world's first Woolmark licensee for hand-knotted rugs (dated 1969) and the first handmade-rug firm with SA8000 (2004). Makes hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs (it describes yarn punched into canvas with a tufting gun, then glued to a backing). Commissions include rugs for the new Parliament (Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha). Why it matters: one of the oldest colonial-era exporters in the Mirzapur–Bhadohi belt (see ner-in-colonial-bhadohi), now also a hand-tufted producer. Dates: 1920 confirmed (Wikipedia, YourStory). When it began hand-tufting not found. Artisan counts vary (10,000–25,000); "India's largest carpet-maker" (Wikipedia) is unsourced there.
