Research notes
The trend and its c. 2021 arrival are supported by 2022 press (Southern Metropolis Daily, The Paper): studios opened first in Hangzhou, then Guangzhou (Sept 2021), Hefei and Jinan. Chinese press credits overseas social media (Instagram, TikTok, Xiaohongshu) and the artist Tim Eads (2018). The Chengdu shop-owner quote the brief gave was NOT found, so it is no longer shown as a quotation: "一个月前在抖音上看到有人玩戳戳秀,觉得确实解压,立刻开起铺子" (unverified). The hand tufting gun, which Tai Ping motorised in Hong Kong by 1973 (US patents for motorised handheld tools go back to 1932; see the gun-origin conflict record), re-entered the mainland around 2021 as an imported Western social-media craze. Citation check (Oct 2026, from search results; pages not opened): partly confirmed. The term 戳戳秀/戳戳绣 and the c. 2021 arrival are supported. Tufting studios appeared first in Hangzhou, then Guangzhou, where one shop opened in Sept 2021, with Hefei and Jinan by early 2022. Chinese press credits overseas social media (Instagram, also TikTok and Xiaohongshu) and the artist Tim Eads (2018). The Chengdu shop-owner quote (抖音…戳戳秀…立刻开起铺子) was NOT found. The 'Tai Ping motorised by 1973' framing is fine; see the HK records.
