Research notes
From गुच्छ, "tuft/cluster". It appears on Hindi Wikipedia and almost nowhere else. The trade writes English loanwords in Devanagari: हैंड टफ्टेड, हैंडनाॅटेड, टफ्टिंग गन. Compare the lexically rich old crafts: दरी, गलीचा, तालीम, रफ़ूगर, बुनकर. The missing vocabulary is evidence of a late, foreign, ready-made technology transfer. Citation check (Oct 2026, from search results; pages not opened): partly confirmed. Confirmed: Hindi Wikipedia's 'क़ालीन' article uses गुच्छित for machine-tufted carpet. An exact-phrase search for 'गुच्छित कालीन' returned no other Hindi pages, which is consistent with 'almost nowhere else'. Hindi trade press does use transliterations (e.g. Amar Ujala headline 'हैंड टफ्टेड कालीनों'). The broader inference about a 'late, foreign technology transfer' is interpretation. 'Never used' by industry cannot be proven by search. Source: क़ालीन – विकिपीडिया (Hindi Wikipedia, 'Carpet').
