Research notes

DLG description: "Ringgold, May 1934. Ethel Partin Stiles in the process of making a tufted bedspread. Here she is stitching the yarn by hand into the bedspread fabric. She follows the pattern, which had been previously rubbed onto the fabric." Three companion photographs show the earlier step: Ethel Partin Stiles (cat005, cat006) and Frances Stiles (cat007) "rubbing a pattern on bedspread fabric", Ringgold, 1934. Why it matters: Dalton bedspreads: a dated, step-by-step sequence of hand tufting at home in 1934, from transferring the pattern to stitching the yarn.
