Research notes

Photograph; the catalogue title is the inscription "[1 p.m. 11-18-38 [ . . . ]B]" (bracketed words added here). DLG description: "Calhoun, November 18, 1938. Construction of the Mount Alto Bedspread Company plant. The company was founded by Dr. John H. Boston ca. 1920 to supply materials for the tufted bedspread industry in Gordon County. Over the years it expanded. The plant seen in this photograph is said to have been the first modern tufted textile mill in Calhoun. Later it became Velvetone & Forrest Mills located on South Wall Street." (A related portrait, gor347, says Mary Ida Hamilton and Dr. John Houser Boston, married 1904, "were one of the pioneers in the tufted bedspread industry in Gordon County.") Why it matters: Dalton bedspreads: dates the move from home work to a purpose-built tufted textile mill in Calhoun (1938) and names a c. 1920 supply firm.
