Research notes

Photograph. Catalogue description: "1946 model tufting machine photographed in front of a white wall. Machine has a tufting width of 115" to accomodate 185 needles and is calibrated to 5/8" gauge." Date: 1946. Catalogue title is "Photograph"; the record title here is supplied. Companion photographs: 2011.002.0261 (another 1946 model, plate naming Cobble Brothers Manufacturing, Chattanooga) and 2011.002.0265 (1949 model, Cobble, 115" width, 370 needles, 5/16" gauge). Why it matters: Building the machine, open question "the first machine to tuft broadloom width (c. 1950)": a dated 1946 multi-needle machine already 115 inches wide (coarse 5/8" gauge, presumably for bedspreads), before the c. 1950 broadloom date. Confirm the maker of this one from the image. Found: Bandy Heritage Center (PastPerfect), search "tufting machine", 2026-10-28.
