Research notes

Photograph. Catalogue description: "1949 model tufting machine. Identification tag on right side of machine indicates manufacturer in Cobble Brothers Machinery. Machine has a tufting width of 115" to accomodate 370 needles and is calibrated to 5/16" gauge." Date: 1949. Why it matters: Building the machine, open question "the first machine to tuft broadloom width (c. 1950)": a 1949 Cobble machine 115" wide at a finer 5/16" gauge, nearer carpet than the 1946 5/8" model (2011.002.0264).
