Research notes
Photograph. Catalogue description: "Tenn-Tex hand-held, single-thread, portable tufting machine used for repairs and fill-ins on tufted materials. Machine is fully threaded and suspended from a wire cable for ready access by the operator." Date: 12/12/1952. Related undated photographs: "Hand-held tufting repair gun in operation" (2011.002.0292); a worker "using a Southern Machine Company hand-held, needle-punch tufting gun to trace a pattern ... A foot-pedal control regulates the speed of the tufting gun" (2011.002.0415). Why it matters: Hand tools and the gun: an exactly dated (1952) named hand tufting gun, the ancestor of today's hobby guns; plus a named maker (Southern Machine Co.) of pattern-tracing guns. Found: Bandy Heritage Center (PastPerfect), search "tufting gun", 2026-10-28.
