Research notes

NMAH record: Object Name "Counterpane, Tufted"; maker unknown; date made 1875; "fabric, cotton (overall material) ; woven; tufted; jacquard"; 71 x 80 in. Same accession as the 1850 counterpane (1994.0305.01). Why it matters: Before the machine, open question on tufted work c. 1850-1890: a second museum-dated tufted counterpane, 1875. Probably loom-tufted (jacquard); confirm. Found: Smithsonian Collections Search, search "tufted", 2026-10-28.
