Research notes

NMAH record: "Machine-tufted twin-sized bedspread with multicolor peacock design, ca. 1955. Made in Georgia. Purchased by Charles Edwin Bryan in 'Peacock Alley,' near Dalton, Georgia, as a gift for his mother, Ethel Sprowel Bryan, who lived in Jeffersontown, Kentucky." Cotton ground and tufting yarn; plain weave; machine tufted; overtufted. Why it matters: Dalton bedspreads: a dated, provenanced machine-tufted roadside ("Peacock Alley") spread, c. 1955. Also at NMAH: tufted bath mat and toilet-seat cover with peacock and flower design, Dalton, 1948-1959 (2017.0232.41, .42), and two mid-20th-century tufted/chenille spreads (2001.0248.83, .85).
