Research notes
Theodor Groz opened a shop with a needle workshop in Ebingen in 1852; Ernst Beckert's needle factory (1871) merged with it in 1937. Until 1980 it made only knitting needles. In 1998 it bought the tufting-needle business (brand "Eisbär") of Josef Zimmermann, Aachen, then added tufting knives, loopers and reed fingers via SNF, Schlemper and Schmetz (1998–2004). Now a major supplier of needles and gauge parts for tufting machines. Why it matters: Germany's real contribution to tufting machinery is components (see ner-de-no-machines); the Zimmermann/Eisbär line is an older German tufting-needle maker worth tracing. Dates: 1852 and 1998 agree (company, Wikipedia); whether all of Zimmermann or only its tufting division was bought differs.
