Research notes
A woven-carpet firm: the Shuttleworths came from England in 1875 and wove carpet in Amsterdam, NY, on secondhand looms (incorporated 1902). The 1920 merger with McCleary, Wallin & Crouse formed Mohawk Carpet Mills; the 1956 merger with Alexander Smith formed Mohasco, just as Georgia's cheaper tufted synthetic carpet took the market. Mohasco moved south (a tufted plant in Dublin, GA, and the end of Wilton/velvet weaving at Laurens, SC, by 1965); Amsterdam carpet making ended about 1968. Spun off as Mohawk Industries in a 1988 buyout; public 1992. A case study of the woven industry losing the race to tufting. Dates: 1878, 1920 and 1956 confirmed; when Mohasco first tufted is unverified (1965 Dublin is the earliest found). "World's largest flooring manufacturer" refers to all flooring by revenue, not carpet.
