Research notes

What it shows: a large (90 × 84 in.) rug of cotton and wool hooked into burlap, the foundation that made the craft widespread. A later canvas backing was added, and the record says neither backing nor binding seems original. Its label says hooking appears to have started in New England and south-east Canada in the 1840s and spread once burlap arrived in the mid-19th century. Museum purchase.
