Research notes

Collection guide abstract: "The collection consists of research files and other records from the primary divisions of the Textile Fibers Department, including the Pioneering Research Division, Rayon Research Division, Technical Service Section, and the research facilities at the Spruance Plant ... and at the Yerkes Plant". Also "market research reports assessing product performance and consumer surveys". The department was founded in 1936 as the Rayon Department and renamed in 1952. Carpet folders found by searching the guide for "carpet": - Pioneering Research Division, Chronological files: "PG-6 - New fibers - carpet fibers, 1937" (Box 10, Folder 22); same title 1938 (Box 12, Folder 22); "PM-2 - Materials - carpet fibers, 1950" (Box 35, Folder 22). - Sales and Marketing divisions, Merchandising Division (Marketing Research Section): "Report No. MMR-59-2: September Survey of Retailers' Attitudes Toward Carpet Fibers and the Du Pont Airwaves Program Promoting 100% Nylon Carpeting, 1959 January 20" (Box 78, Folder 15); "Report No. MMR-59-40: Summary Report of Evaluation of Carpet Advertisements, 1959 August 14" (Box 78, Folder 50); "Report No. MMR-59-47: Recent Developments in 'Acrilan' Carpet Sales, 1959 August 31" (Box 78, Folder 57). - Also "Technical Information Files - Density, Bulk, Loft, 1951-1962, 1967" (Box 74, Folder 9), possibly relevant to bulked yarn. No folder title mentions "tufted"; none gives the BCF launch date directly. Why it matters: Nylon chapter: the boxes most likely to show the BCF carpet nylon launch (open question "BCF date, 1957 or 1959") and DuPont's 1958-59 carpet advertising (the 1958 "airwaves" programme for 100% nylon carpeting). Paper only; needs a visit or a request. Found: Hagley finding aids, search "Textile Fibers Department" then "carpet" within the collection, 2026-10-28.
