Research notes
Two notebooks of recipes for dyeing wool for Brussels carpets made at the Tariff Manufacturing Company's mills. Per the finding aid, Tariffville was founded in 1825 when the company was founded to produce carpet; it changed owners and names and closed in 1867 after a fire. Stationer's labels of I. A. Whitcomb, Lawrence. Why it matters: rare mill-floor evidence from early American Brussels (looped-pile woven) carpet, the product tufted broadloom later undercut. Pair with Bigelow's Brussels power loom (1845–51).
