Research notes

Annual report of Mohasco Industries (Mohawk and Alexander Smith carpet lines) for 1957; 19-page pamphlet. Read from Hagley's OCR text (page image 7, "Products"): the Mohawk and Alexander Smith lines were "strengthened during the year by the use of new synthetic fibres", Chromspun acetate and Acrilan acrylic, while wool remained featured "exclusively in many of its lines and in blends with nylon in other fabrics"; and "New manufacturing techniques materially enhancing the quality and appearance of its tufted and velvet fabric lines ... were perfected during the year, and patents have been received or are pending". It also notes Mohasco's 20% interest in Bancroft's "Ban-Lon" bulking process for nylon. Held, oddly, in the Bancroft Miss America collection. Why it matters: shows an old-line woven-carpet maker (Mohawk/Alexander Smith) already running tufted lines and patenting tufting techniques by 1957, and switching to synthetic fibres. Useful for the woven-to-tufted transition. Found: Hagley Digital Archives, search "Mohasco", 2026-10-28.
